ISO 22301 is now an essential tool for ensuring the operational resilience of European organizations and complying with the obligations introduced by Directive (EU) 2022/2555 – NIS 2. With the entry into force of this regulation, companies and public entities must adopt advanced measures for risk management, incident response, and continuity of critical services. Implementing ISO 22301:2019 – Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS) – enables organizations to structure effective processes and demonstrate full compliance with the NIS 2 Directive.

NIS 2 expands security obligations to sectors such as energy, transport, healthcare, public administration, manufacturing, and digital services, introducing the principle of operational resilience as a key element. Through ISO 22301, organizations can identify critical processes, analyze their vulnerabilities through Business Impact Analysis, assess operational and cyber risks, and define Business Continuity Plans (BCP) to ensure recovery after unexpected events.

Member States were required to transpose the Directive by October 17, 2024, while organizations classified as essential or important must comply by October 18, 2025. By this deadline, it will be necessary to demonstrate the existence of documented procedures for incident management and business recovery.

Implementing ISO 22301 is not only a regulatory requirement but also a competitive advantage. It helps prevent costly disruptions, protect data and reputation, and strengthen market trust. The integration of NIS 2, ISO 22301, and ISO 27001 creates an integrated security system based on resilience, accountability, and continuous improvement.

As highlighted by Cindy Martine Grasso, CEO of CMG Swiss Sagl: “ISO 22301 is the concrete answer to the new challenge of operational resilience imposed by the NIS 2 Directive.”
